The history of BIM teaching and the approaches used at Riga Technical University (RTU) are outlined in this paper. Universities have to join the promotion of BIM ideas not only to the designers and engineers, but to a much wider public than at present.
The training for effective use of this relatively new and very complex approach from the very beginning of the building lifecycle in the construction industry is even a more complex task. The success in the collaboration to unite common efforts of architects, constructors and HVAC engineers would make the work of all involved stakeholders more productive because the existing information technologies provide this option already for a long time. This could indicate a prospect to embrace BIM technology into UM's architectural syllabus.īuilding Information Modelling (BIM) is a complex process of managing not only design documentation in 3D form but it also includes all the consecutive stages of the design analysis, followed by construction management, and including facility management after the site completion. This BIM software however does receive positive feedback from the students for its benefits. In contrast, BIM software is found to be less commonly used by the students. The result indicates that both AutoCAD and SketchUp are the most commonly used software in both education and practice. An exploratory study has been conducted through a survey among 84 respondents in 3rd, 4th and 5th year of the architecture program at the University of Malaya (UM). This study aims to explore and understand the architectural students' perception towards the advantage of using BIM software in their design studio projects.
This, in turn, requires architecture schools in Malaysia to consider adjusting their curriculums, and syllabus in preparing their students for the demand of the AEC industry. To ensure the success in the implementation, it is important for future architectural graduates to be equipped with the operational skill of the software. In 2014, the first Malaysia's international BIM day was held at Putra World Trade Centre (PWTC) Kuala Lumpur that marked the largest awareness event to highlight the nationwide BIM adoption and implementation promotion campaign on this new technology. In recent years, Building Information Modelling (BIM) has received enormous attention from the Architectural, Engineering and Construction (AEC) industry around the globe.
